Responsibilities of the Clerk and Recorder
The Gunnison County Clerk and Recorder has the responsibility for the following departments in county government: Recording Department, Election Department, and Motor Vehicle Department.
Responsibilities of the Recording Department
The recording department is responsible for processing and preserving documents presented for recording as public record. Permanent record is kept on microfilm and optical images. Some records date back to 1877. All records are open to the public and certified copies of any document of record are available for a fee (PDF). Included in the records are: real estate records, military discharges, school records (limited information), maps and plats, marriage licenses and civil unions.
Responsibilities of the Elections Department
The election department is responsible for voter registration: compilation of ballots, absentee ballots, and early voting ballots for the regular primary, general and special county elections; training of election judges; conduct of election day procedures; tabulation of election day results.
Responsibilities of the Motor Vehicle Department
The Clerk and Recorder acts as an agent for the State of Colorado, Department of Revenue in titling and licensing all motor vehicles purchased, leased or entering the state. All motor vehicle titles and registration requirements are set by state statute or set by rule and regulation promulgated by the Department of Revenue.
