Purpose
The Gunnison County Housing Authority was established on August 21, 1979 after a petition was received from 25 residents of Gunnison County and a public hearing was held. The Gunnison County Housing Authority then established a Housing Advisory Committee to oversee rights, powers and responsibilities assigned by the Authority.
In 2012, the Gunnison Valley Regional Housing Authority was created. It is funded through annual appropriations from Gunnison County and other local municipalities, and it's Board and staff are comprised of representatives from those organizations and the community. The Gunnison County Housing Authority's Board is made up of the members of the Board of County Commissioners, and the County Manager serves as its Executive Secretary. The Gunnison County Housing Authority and the Gunnison Valley Regional Housing Authority are two separate entities that work together to bring affordable housing to the Gunnison Valley.
Gunnison County Strategic Plan
The June 18, 2024 iteration of the Gunnison County Strategic Plan includes this strategic result:
By December 31, 2030, in addition to the 89 essential housing units the County will have facilitated by the end of 2022, the County will facilitate the construction of 300 new essential housing units of the 1,080-1,345 units identified as needed in the most recent Gunnison Valley Housing Needs Assessment.
The County provides an annual performance report related to the Gunnison County Strategic Plan, and those reports are available online.
Gunnison County is building and owning rental housing at a range of AMI's with most rents affordable to households between 70-120 AMI. The County will hold these units in perpetuity and maintain cost affordability. When there is excess rent revenue after management, maintenance and funding replacement reserves, the County Housing Authority will use the revenue to reinvest to achieve the Board's strategic goals for housing and other community needs.
