Concealed Handgun Permitting (CHP)
Obtaining a NEW Colorado CHP (Concealed Handgun Permit)
If you are interested in applying for a concealed handgun permit from the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office, please read the following instructions carefully.
You may obtain a concealed handgun permit application by doing one of the following:

Submitting Your Application
Please drop off your completed application with all additional information at the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office, located at:
510 W. Bidwell Avenue

What to Expect & Remember
A Sheriff's representative will notarize your signature when you drop off your completed application and all accompanying documents.
- Don't forget to include a copy of your training certificate received from a certified instructor for the handgun or training course that you attended.
- Don't forget to bring Certified Funds (Cashiers Check/Money Order) for $152.50, made payable to the "Gunnison County Sheriff's Office" or you can pay with cash (exact change please) or Credit/Debit card. Please be aware that transactions made with a credit/debit card are subject to a Portal Administration fee of $0.75 plus 2.25% of total transaction amount.
- Don't forget a copy of your valid Colorado drivers license.
Processing of your application can take up to 90 days or more.
When to Renew
To renew your Concealed Handgun Permit, you may apply as early as 120 days prior to the expiration of your original permit. It is recommended to apply at least 30 days in advance of your expiration date.
Steps to Renew
The renewal application process requires the following:
- A completed application (PDF) for renewal (this is the same form as the original application, but check the box that says renewal and write in your permit number).
- Do not sign the application - applications must be signed in front of an authorized Sheriff's representative or a Public Notary.
- Certified Funds (Cashiers Check/Money Order) for $63 made payable to the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office (This is for a simple background check and the processing fees - you will not be fingerprinted again) Please return the above items in person to:

NOTE: We will not accept personal checks. - Once your application for renewal has been processed and approved, we will contact you to schedule an appointment for taking a new picture and issuing the new permit.
Failure to Renew
Once your permit expires you are not allowed to carry a concealed handgun!
If you do not renew your permit within six months of expiration, the permit shall be deemed permanently expired, and to obtain a permit, you will need to re-apply by submitting a new application and all the appropriate New CHP Permit fees.
Requirements
If you are a retired law enforcement officer, you may be eligible for a Retired Law Enforcement Officer Concealed Handgun Permit. The following is a list of requirements:
- Be retired, in good standing, from service with a public agency as a law enforcement officer, other than for reasons of mental instability
- Before such retirement, were authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of, or the incarceration of, any person for any violation of law, and had statutory powers of arrest
- Before such retirement, was regularly employed as a law enforcement officer for an aggregate of 15 years or more; or retired from service with such agency, after completing any applicable probationary period of such service, due to a service-connected disability, as determined by such agency
- Have a non-forfeitable right to benefits under the retirement plan of the agency
- Are not under the influence of alcohol or another intoxicating or hallucinatory drug or substance
- Are not prohibited by federal law from receiving a firearm
- You must have an ID card, issued by the agency you retired from, with your picture on it, specifying that you are retired
Re-Qualification
You must qualify once a year with the agency you retired from, under the same criteria required when you were in active service. Or, if you are not living in the same location as the agency you retired from, and you would like the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office to issue your Retired Law Enforcement Concealed Handgun Permit, you must schedule an appointment for a qualification shoot with the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office.
You will be tested based on the Colorado Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Academy's Rule 27: Qualification Course for Retired Law Enforcement. There is a nominal fee involved.
