1. Who is eligible?

Any person who is a legal resident of the State of Colorado and who is 21 years of age (18 years of age for a Temporary Emergency Permit) is eligible for a concealed handgun permit.

Also, a person who is a member of the Armed Forces and is stationed pursuant to permanent duty station orders at a military installation in the State of Colorado, and a member of the person’s immediate family is living in Colorado, is deemed a legal resident of the State of Colorado.

2. What type of handgun training is required?

You must show evidence that you attended a handgun training course, some examples include, but are not limited to:

• Evidence at the time of application that you are a Certified Handgun Instructor
• Handgun Safety Course offered by a Law Enforcement Agency, or an Institution or Organization or Handgun Training School that is open to the general public and is taught by a Certified Instructor within ten years of your application
• Law Enforcement Handgun Training Safety Course
• Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces within three years of your application
• Proof of honorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces within ten years of your application which also reflects that you were a marksman, weapons instructor, or had recognized pistol qualifications

A Training Certificate from any class attended, or a copy thereof, must be provided with your Concealed Handgun Permit Application.

3. What is Reciprocity with CHP?

4. How much does the permit cost?

A Concealed Handgun Permit Application is $152.50 total:

• $100.00 for application processing
• $52.50 for the fingerprinting and FBI background check

5. What type of payment is accepted?

Accepted forms of payment: Certified Funds (Cashiers Check/Money Order), Exact Cash, or Credit Card.

Certified Funds must be made payable to the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office for $152.50.

6. Where do I have my signature on the application witnessed?

You must sign the application in front of a Sheriff’s Office representative; therefore, you should bring your unsigned application to the Sheriff’s Office, and it will be witnessed by a Sheriff’s Office representative after you sign it and provide your driver’s license as proof of identification.

7. Do I have to get fingerprinted?

Yes, you will have to get fingerprinted. After you have turned in your permit application, arrangements will be made for you to come in and have your fingerprints taken.

8. Do I need to have my picture taken?

Yes, you will have to have your picture taken. You will be contacted after you turn in your application and arrangements will be made to have your picture taken for your permit at the Sheriff’s Office.

9. How long is the permit good for?

A permit is good for five years.

10. What if I move?

A permit holder must notify the issuing Sheriff’s Office within 30 days of moving. Failure to do so is considered a Class 1 petty offense.

11. What happens if my permit is lost / stolen / damaged?

A permit holder must notify the issuing Sheriff’s Office within three business days of the loss, theft, or destruction of a Concealed Handgun Permit. Failure to do so is considered a Class 1 petty offense.

12. I am a resident of the State of Colorado, yet I have a permit from another state, is my permit good in the State of Colorado?

No. Per legislation signed into law by Governor Ritter in May 2007, if you are a resident of the State of Colorado (i.e., have a Colorado Driver’s License or ID card) and possess a permit from another state, that permit is no longer valid in the State of Colorado. You would have to check the issuing state to see if it is still valid in other states.

If you want to carry a concealed handgun, you must apply for a Concealed Handgun Permit from the State of Colorado.

13. Is my name entered into any kind of database if I am a Concealed Handgun Permit holder in the State of Colorado?

Yes. If you possess a Concealed Handgun Permit from the State of Colorado, your name and other identifying information will be entered into the Colorado Crime Information Computer (CCIC). It will be accessible only by law enforcement and cannot be shared with anyone outside of law enforcement (i.e., the general public or the media).

This database is not used for compilation purposes (facts, figures, or lists); it is similar to how a driver’s license is entered into a State of Colorado database and is necessary for use in law enforcement situations.
