GUNNISON COUNTY HIRES NEW ASSISTANT COUNTY MANAGER FOR PUBLIC WORKS
Martin Schmidt to Assume Role in Summer 2022
Gunnison County, Colo – Gunnison County has selected Martin Schmidt to assume the role of Assistant County Manager for Public Works. Martin is currently serving as the Public Works Director for the Town of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Prior to that, he worked for Gunnison County Public Works for nearly 10 years. He started on the Public Works crew in 2009 and had risen to the District 1 Foreman in Gunnison County’s Public Works Department by the time he departed for the Director job in Pagosa Springs.
Martin received his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics with a Minor in Agricultural Science from Truman State University in Missouri. While working his way up through the ranks at Gunnison County Public Works, he earned his Master of Public Administration degree with Local Government Emphasis from the University of Colorado Denver, graduating with an impressive 3.87 GPA.
Martin will assume his new role this summer, and retiring Public Works Department Director / Deputy County Manager Marlene Crosby has agreed to remaining employed on a temporary part-time basis to help ensure a smooth transition.
“We are excited to welcome Martin back ‘home’ to Gunnison County after his years in Pagosa Springs getting experience as a department director. Martin has always been ambitious and focused on his educational and professional development. He took advantage of many professional conferences and trainings, attended the Gunnison County Leadership Academy in 2014 and earned his Master’s Degree while working full time. He has applied what he learned very effectively and became an excellent manager and leader. It’s heartening to see all of that hard work pay off for Martin and I’m really glad that Gunnison County will once again be the beneficiary of Martin’s efforts and his innovative approach to his profession,” said County Manager Matthew Birnie
