GUNNISON COUNTY ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT EARNS DISTINGUISHED BUDGET PRESENTATION AWARD FROM THE GOVERNMENT FINANCE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA (GFOA)
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) recently announced that Gunnison County, Colorado’s Administration Department received the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2015 budget. This represents the fifth straight year that the Administration Department has received this award which, due to detailed financial and strategic planning, coincides with other related achievements such as vastly improved performance throughout the organization and the completion of large capital projects which had been necessary for decades yet not financially feasible until the County began budgeting for performance outcomes. “This award highlights our commitment to following the highest principles of governmental budgeting and places us in a group of usually between only 10-15 Colorado counties who are awarded this distinction. Thank you to everyone involved in the 2015 budget process,” said Finance Director Linda Nienhueser.
In order to receive the award, the Administration Department had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation that have been designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award. An important characteristic of budgets that receive this award is that they include performance as well as financial information.
